“The Underground Railroad” won the National Book Award for this year. The best seller of US recently was written by Colson Whitehead. The novel explains the outcome and horrors of slavery. It also portrays the worst side of racism.
The novel travels with Cora a slave in a plantation at Georgia. He escapes the plantation and travels north via an underground subway. The novel has already been selected for the “Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club”. Whitehead who is against the outcome of US election results accepted the award.
In his acceptance speech he said “We’re happy in here; outside is the blasted hellhole wasteland of Trumpland. Be kind to everybody, make art and fight the power.” His speech reflected the uncertainty America hold on the outcome of the election results.
The National Book Award was introduced in the year 1950 and it is being awarded to the best books of US literature. This year’s award ceremony was hosted in Cipriani Wall Street, Manhattan with more than 700 guests in attendance.
